What a year it has been. It has been unpredictable and difficult year. I did go through my anxious moments and ups and downs with my feelings but it was also the year I tried new things, because - well, I had to. </div><div><br /></div><div>At the beginning of the year I enjoyed going to few meet ups and meeting new people. I made new friends and was full of hope for doing more of these this year.</div><div><br /></div><div>In March 2020, the UK went into the first lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic.</div><div><br /></div><div>At first I was overwhelmed by sad news - how it's taken everyone's normal away, and upset by empty shelves in supermarkets and anxious people on the street, I became anxious myself. Apart from the NHS and key workers, everyone had to pause what we were doing and was told to stay at home and safe. In few weeks I stopped watching news - to avoid the unsettling news around the world.</div><div><br /></div><div>My industry isn't considered essential but I am really grateful for those who work in art and creative industry. I have to say though when I was feeling down, our industry was the one helped me out from the down. National Theatre's weekly play helped me, music I listened to helped me, all the creatives and illustrators came up with such thoughtful and creative encouraging arts to cheer everyone up. Everyone was so caring and just wanted to help - that was just NICE!</div><div><br /></div><div>Despite the loss of potential event-related jobs in the spring, I am also grateful that I had a couple of regular jobs this year, which is really rare for me. I usually don't know when the next job comes in. These jobs kept me sane.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then came August I was miserable again. I was so much under pressure with everything. It had been so long since I met anybody. ( I live with my husband and we had great laugh together but it is still not quite the same as when I was able to see people outside.) I realized how my thoughts were getting inwards with loops of negative thoughts and I was telling myself "I am not good enough"all the time.</div><div><br /></div><div>I took a break from work and this time nature helped me out from the depression. </div><div>I went away on beautiful country walks completely free from TV and social media. I felt completely re-born! </div><div><br /></div><div>I also tried participating in online markets. These were new for me but since there weren't any physical markets I gave it a go. Promoting on Instagram was hard - I still think I'm terrible at it but hey, I tried something new and learned few things doing it.</div><div><br /></div><div>These illustrations summarize my 2020. My lockdown house map and my anxious mind. </div><div><br /></div><div>Wishing you all a happy and brighter 2021! :)</div><br /><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2UjYGgz095o/X-S7ohHtOJI/AAAAAAAAcOE/_3oHFHaFAk4FonYG1mmEgZSu3lB9CcaBQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2000/quarantine-house-map-cropped-signed.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="2000" height="250" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2UjYGgz095o/X-S7ohHtOJI/AAAAAAAAcOE/_3oHFHaFAk4FonYG1mmEgZSu3lB9CcaBQCLcBGAsYHQ/w666-h250/quarantine-house-map-cropped-signed.jpg" width="666" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div> </div><div>2020年は本当に想像もしない1年となった。 </div><div><br /></div><div>2021年は少しでも皆様にとって明るい一年となりますように!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.nozomiinoue.com">www.nozomiinoue.com</a></div><div class="blogger-post-footer">www.nozomiinoue.com</div>Nozomi Inouehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12938611888929439581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4979577794915601317.post-53735737232415745832019-05-08T16:38:00.001+01:002019-05-08T16:38:03.592+01:00Monkeys and cheese plants at the Canbury Arms Kingston - pub mural project<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<br />
<br />
Do you remember I said I wanted to do more collaboration works this year? So this is the second collaboration project I did this year with my friend and an illustrator <a href="http://www.tabithamacbeth.com/" target="_blank">Tabitha Macbeth</a>. 😊It's just that I took a long time to write about it...<br />
<br />
So back in Feb/March, Tabitha approached me if I wanted to collaborate on a pub mural project. - I said Yes! It was around the time I was thinking I wanted to work on a larger scale canvas as well, so all of those coincided together I was working an a massive wall at the Canbury Arms pub in Kingston-upon-Thames.<br />
<br />
We were given the Tropical foliage(esp. Cheese plant) brief to match the pub's blinds and wall papers. Tabitha had an idea of including the monkeys and we started working on the final design for the wall. <br />
Here are snapshots of the final painting and its process.<br />
<br />
We were initially worried that, as we both have completely different illustration styles the final image might not look coherent, but we were glad with how it turned out.<br />
<br />
Thank you very much Tab and the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/canburyarms/" target="_blank">Canbury Arms</a> pub for taking me on board!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.instagram.com/canburyarms/" target="_blank">The Canbury Arms </a>パブの皆様、タビーにも感謝しております。<br />

I remember it was few days after I've written here or on my Instagram post that I wanted to do more collaboration work this year. I got message from <a href="http://www.kateslaterillustration.com/" target="_blank">Kate Slater</a> about this exciting collaboration project. Kate and I have studied together at university and she is also an illustrator.<br />
<div>
Kate has been running the London marathon for the Refuge charity. Every year she raises money for the Refuge who gives supports to those who suffer from domestic violence and abuse. </div>
<a href="http://www.kateslaterillustration.com/blog/2019/2/8/the-refuge-tree" target="_blank">The Refuge Tree project</a> (click this link to Kate's blog for more info on the project) - Kate made a huge paper collage tree and cut them up into A6 sized postcards and sent them to 95 female illustrators. Each and individual illustrators were asked to illustrate anything on the card as long as some part of the tree was visible. These cards were then sent back to Kate and the tree was exhibited in the window of London Review Bookshop from 1st March till 18th March 2019 . The cards were auctioned on the International Women's day and the money raised were donated to the Refuge charity.<br />
<br />

<br />

It was amazing how different each artist's take on the open brief was and I just loved that my illustration was a part of a huge ray of amazing illustrators! Illustrators usually work on their own ( I do most of the time) and I really felt we were working for one goal together. The auction for the artworks were held on International Women's day and it has raised over £4,000 for the Refuge. </div>

</div>

My husband and I spent 12 months in Japan in 2018 as I wanted to show him Japan throughout the changing seasons and I also wanted to spend more time closer to my family. I left Japan when I was 15 and since then I never really lived in Japan. I will be posting some of our adventures in Japan every now and then.<br />
<br />
So now we are back here in the UK (came back at the end of November), welcomed by something I had forgotten about! - the dark and early sunset and wet London. Yes, we didn't come back to the best of its season. Now in January we are properly settled back.<br />
<br />
I would like to make 2019 a fresh start and maybe trying something new. I will definitely be doing more self-promotions and spend more time into my online shop, coming up with new items.<br />
I would also like to do some collaborations with friends - I have many talented friends in my industry and other industries so it would be nice to do something together. Anybody interested? Let me know!<br />
<br />
<br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wow, it's the 1st of June already! Time flies!! I have been rather busy with various things so this post is a bit of a late update about the job I have done in April. I have illustrated 7 Hawaiian traditional foods for Hawaii Style magazine issue no.53, published from Ei publishing in Japan. Before this I had never been commissioned to do food illustration so it was amazing when the client told me that she saw my food illustrations I have done for my personal work and commissioned me. I should keep illustrating what I like. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have never been to Hawai so some of the food is hard to imagine what it would taste like. I really want to try Poi - sweet dish made from taro, and Haupia- another sweet dish made with coconut but looks life tofu. Some slow cooked food looked amazing too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The reference photos I received showed food in polystyrene containers and were mostly monotone ( beige and brown) so the client has asked me to brighten the illustration. I have decided to use colourful plates and crockery to add some colour. </div>

(English to follow.)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
My gosh, it's March already. It has been about 3 months since my husband and I moved to Japan.<br />
<br />
Within those 3 months I have experienced many stuff that I would have done in years if I had lived in Japan. I have never "lived" in Japan after uni, so for me, coming over here was a more scary decision than an exciting one. <br />
<br />
We looked for a room to rent in Tokyo, (but we decided to stay close to my parents since living in Tokyo was an expensive option and we liked the mountains around here. Though finding a room was difficult as my husband is non-Japanese and some landlords are sceptical of foreigners, and my job is freelance and I would be the one signing the contract. They wouldn’t like this either. We hadn't gone further with this so we might have got a place but we don't know..) I also made an inkan - which is a Japanese seal that acts as a signature in western country. I have also written Japanese equivalent of CV - all written by hand and it's a lot of writing! Anyway all these things are natural to those who live here but these were things I had to learn and do. I would have embarrassed myself even more if I was older and didn't know all of these. I was imagining that if I came here I would have fitted in much easier but I discovered that it was much harder and I feel like everyday I am filling in those gaps of knowledge that was missing.<br />
<br />
I also had few good things that I experienced because we made the move to Japan. I met a recent client face to face so that I could do a further job with her. Unfortunately it didn't end up being a job but it never happened if I didn't see her here. I wish to do a job with her again in the future and many more opportunities to come while I'm in Japan.<br />
<br />
Changing of the subject, I never really got to show you my 2018 London calendar so I thought I might mention it here. I managed to sell few on my Etsy shop and the rest was then sold at west elm Kingston store - which was a big exciting news before I left for Japan. Please see the photos above for detail.<br />
I have illustrated 12 of my favourite places in London and greater London. If you haven't visited any of these places then I really do recommend it.<br />
<br />
Finally, this is my wish - I thought I'll mention it so that I should make it happen. I would like to do an exhibition while i'm in Japan.<br />

I wanted to write about West elm before the new year. This was one of the exciting thing that happened this year! Few of my products from my online shop is now stored and available to buy in west elm Kingston store.<br />
<br />
West elm is an American furniture and interior store and they also have a programme called <a href="https://www.westelm.com/shop/local/?cm_type=gnav" target="_blank">west elm LOCAL</a> which is a programme to connect the local makers and the community together in their each store location. The artists are working locally and using locally sourced materials to make the products. I think this is a brilliant way to bring the people and artists together and make each store unique. It was my first wholesale experience and I have learnt a lot from this project.<br />
<br />
My stocked items at the store are linocut prints of London icons, 2018 London calendar, map of London poster, set of London postcards and Thames river greeting cards.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately I had already left UK for the store opening (which was on 8th December) but so many of my friends were sending me photos of the store with my items. Thank you so much!! And this could not have happened without the help of 2 friends who kindly helped me with the packaging and the delivery of the products to the store. Thank you so much!! xx<br />
<br />
Although I was in the amidst of all the packing and sorting out for the move to Japan, it was worth the hustle of getting all my products ready, printed and partially packaged and doing all the product administration. I really want to see the store myself when I get back to London.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>

2017 has only 3days left. Did you get your 2018 diary already? This year I have worked on an illustrated Paris map<span style="font-family: inherit;"> to go in inside the <a href="http://treasurenews.jp/archives/40194/" target="_blank">2018 diary</a> by <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><u>To b. by agnès b.</u> published by Takarajimasha publishing.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This was a relatively quick job not as short as some of the jobs I had to do in the past. 1 week for rough and another week to finish the final. Although I had 2 weeks I had to deal with time difference of 8 hours between UK and Japan. That meant I had to hand in the work a day early.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I really enjoyed illustrating the map. This was a job I had to think about the balance with text that goes in later on. So when I saw the final product I was really happy how illustration and the text fit nicely. I finally got to see the final product when I arrived in Japan in November.</span></span><br />

私は今年、宝島社出版の<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><a href="http://treasurenews.jp/archives/40194/" target="_blank">To b. by agnès b. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</span></span></div>

A LOT has happened since my last post. I'm writing this post in Japan, sitting on a little sofa with my husband next to me in this little town where I grew up about 2 hours train ride from Tokyo.<br />
<br />
It's funny because I'm taking TEFL English teaching course online and it describes the feeling of arriving in a new country: you are in the tourist/honeymoon phase first, excited about all the new things around you then comes negotiation phase or irritation-to-anger phase where everything you were used to does not seem to happen in the country. After few months you start to realize the customs of the country and you will get along and settle in. ( or some case you absolutely hate it and go back.) I've pretty much done that up to the irritation-to-anger phase. Things are starting to get a little easier.<br />
<br />
I left Japan when I was 15 years old to study abroad. Pretty much never LIVED in Japan since then. So coming back after many years and trying to live here is proven to be not easy at all.<br />
<br />
I'm hoping for a positive outcome from this crazy move. I want to show my husband this beautiful Japan's nature throughout the year and get some inspiration from here for my future work. I'm also looking forward to spending some time with my family after many years of being away.<br />
This was a bit different from my usual post but thought I would update what I'm up to.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Photos show some highlights so far.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have recently completed this illustration inspired by my own vegetable garden at home.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Growing up in a countryside in Japan, my family had grown rice and we had enough to feed us for a whole year. So we never had to buy rice from shops for a long time until we let go of the field. We still have a little patch to grow vegetables and my mum grows parsley and shiso herbs in flower pots. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until I started growing vegetables myself, I had never really paid attentions to how many creatures I could attract to the vegetable garden. Yes, there are fox and squirrels in London but you don't really see them this close in the open.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before moving, I was growing basils in a flower pot just outside my front door. One day I was plucking some leaves from the pot and I felt some presence behind me. When I turned around I saw a fox sneaking up on me. I quickly walked inside the flat but I could see that the fox was attracted to the beautiful smell of basil through frosted glass. It stayed there for a while. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can never relax with strawberries and blueberries. That squirrel is always back when you are not looking, or even, when you are looking. Yes I think I know your face by now! You are so bold and look right at me while you munch on my strawberry. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bees love lavenders and borages. Even though I am very scared of them, they are generally good. I am happy if I am contributing to their honey collection a little.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have also spotted 8 magpies in the garden. I think they are a family. I even saw them trick up a pigeon to take some fruits themselves. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think I spend far too much time observing these little creatures but they all have personality of their own and sometimes amusing. Now all I need is Sun this summer so that I can finally eat red tomatoes. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
I have worked on rather large scale canvases in the last month.<br />
I was asked to recreate the takeout cup design I did for <a href="https://www.facebook.com/localherocoffee/" target="_blank">Local hero</a> cafe 3 years ago onto their walls.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L2MTN3q-Paw/WWjHS2wEw2I/AAAAAAAAEBQ/PwUBdOHqa4Qi6QutP95sa_ydPdBDqkO1ACLcBGAs/s1600/Local-hero-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="703" data-original-width="1024" height="273" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L2MTN3q-Paw/WWjHS2wEw2I/AAAAAAAAEBQ/PwUBdOHqa4Qi6QutP95sa_ydPdBDqkO1ACLcBGAs/s400/Local-hero-01.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This was my original design for the paper cups. The brief was fairly open. The owner wanted a cyclist holding coffee with fume coming out. So I came up with the sketch of the cyclist passing London scene and everyone turning around for the aroma of coffee. Local hero cafes are located in Kingston and Fulham (both within London) so I included the iconic cityscapes and the Richmond and Bushy park deer as this would tie in nicely with both cafe location. I then added latte art as trees in the scene.<br />
<br />
I have taken some photos of how the mural was done. (Please excuse me for amateurish video! I was experimenting with time-lapse setting and the camera wasn't set still...😅 )<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
At first I was little scared to make the mark on such a big canvas but as soon as I started I really enjoy having such a massive space to draw freely! I have also discovered new materials for mural jobs.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

I was very happy and literally jumping around when I found out my illustration for the joint AOI and TFL competition, "Sounds of the city" was shortlisted.<br />
The exhibition is now opened at London Transport Museum.<br />
<br />
When I heard the theme for the competition - "Sounds of the city" my thoughts went for the Ronnie Scotts jazz bar. ( I have been there couple of times and love it! The ambience and the gigs are great and the cocktails!) I also remembered being mesmerised by seeing red lanterns decorating the whole street in China town around Chinese new year. So they were really the starting point for my illustration "Interconnected city." Then there's sounds of busy Southbank scene in the summer, Prom of Royal Albert Hall.<br />
I also started this piece few months after referendum - Brexit was announced. I wanted to show how London is a diverse city and different cultures are co-existing and interconnected.<br />

<br />
<br />
コンペのテーマは『Sounds of the City』。 <br />
<br />
<br />

I am planning to make a calendar for next year.<br />
I didn't leave enough time for myself last year to make a calendar. So I am starting early this year to complete 12 illustrations.<br />
<br />
It already went through one idea change from my initial idea but I am settled on doing less known places in or around London this year. I happened to visit Greenwich recently and I just wanted to capture the place in my own style. Another inspiration is this book, "Tired of London, Tired of Life" - by Tom Jones and illustrated by Hannah Warren. ( Published from Virgin Books). It is a book listing less known places in London and you can visit a place a day. I always loved this book and went to places that were mentioned in the book and loved them. ( I even written a blog post about those exciting places I visited from the book <a href="http://nozomiorange100.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/exploring-london.html" target="_blank">here</a>. )<br />

Here are the illustrations I have done so far. I am also trying to limit the use of colour in each image to practice my colour palette.<br />
The locations are entirely my selfish choice of my favourite places around London. OK, so it's 3 down, 9 more to go!<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">December last year, </span><span style="text-align: left;">a good friend of mine in Japan had her wedding.</span><span style="text-align: left;"> </span><span style="text-align: left;">I was asked to do a welcome board with the illustration of the couple, which is quite common to have at weddings in Japan. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">I was also asked to give it a Christmas feel since the wedding was in December. She also asked for little forest creatures to be included.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />

<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">I haven't been to too many weddings but it was one of the most emotional wedding. I was mentioned in her little speech as one of the girls who changed her life in school. ( I had no idea! until I heard the speech.) She was extremely shy at school and I apparently made her to open up. She is now one of the most bubbly and a friendly atmosphere-setter of my friends. I remember talking to her in the first few days of school because she was busy drawing in her sketchbook at her desk. She is really good at drawing.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">And here is another wedding commission I had recently of a couple. They are a lovely couple of English man and Lithuanian lady. They wanted to reflect each other's background so I illustrated the girl in folk Lithuanian costume and English gentleman. This was a cover illustration for their wedding invites. </span></div>

</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uqOxftJieeU/WLm1b9oq5_I/AAAAAAAADzQ/6vsOvptZbGMq7ACbfCAcV--R3vAbMAn2ACLcB/s1600/Darjeeling-packaging-web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uqOxftJieeU/WLm1b9oq5_I/AAAAAAAADzQ/6vsOvptZbGMq7ACbfCAcV--R3vAbMAn2ACLcB/s640/Darjeeling-packaging-web.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After coming back from India in January I had a meeting with my agency. I have visited India for 3 times now and it has been my desire for years to illustrate India. Tea packaging was one of the theme I wanted to illustrated for a long time. This coincided with my discussion with agency of "putting my illustration in context." So I decided to do packaging illustrations.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've visited Mumbai many times and had chai from street stalls, at stations and at home. And I like the buzz of the Mumbai city. Rickshaw for example, I found the drivers' skill to take you through the hectic traffic amazing. They are often chilled out and barefoot and driving in casual style. So I included him in the design for Mumbai cutting chai.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-No5KSQtekB4/WLm1gua7zBI/AAAAAAAADzY/jNVAnV31ERczarqjcsa3VOPGZdOPgnhCwCLcB/s1600/cutting-chai-recipe-web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-No5KSQtekB4/WLm1gua7zBI/AAAAAAAADzY/jNVAnV31ERczarqjcsa3VOPGZdOPgnhCwCLcB/s640/cutting-chai-recipe-web.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the second packaging I picked Darjeeling tea. In contrast with colourful and cheerful Mumbai chai, this packaging is serene and green. The tea plantation is located in the mountain and the tea plantation is lush green. During my research I have also come across many articles about the tea pickers were under paid and living condition that the tea farm should provide them weren't at a minimum standard. So please buy fair trade next time you go and shop for tea. So what do you think of these packaging?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tH63v9Huxqw/WLm1ekoEwWI/AAAAAAAADzU/sfV9w9iSFcMUe1L-e_UTRSbrBEDDtgqUwCLcB/s1600/Tea-packaging-darjeeling-3d-web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tH63v9Huxqw/WLm1ekoEwWI/AAAAAAAADzU/sfV9w9iSFcMUe1L-e_UTRSbrBEDDtgqUwCLcB/s640/Tea-packaging-darjeeling-3d-web.jpg" width="475" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>

My resolution last year was to stay on top of things. ( I think I have achieved it quite well. Or perhaps it slipped with this post being put up late?) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year I would like to continue creating more illustrations, make use of social media more for exposure and if I'm torn between whether to do it or not, just DO IT. This last resolution was one of my slogan when I was in school. I tried so many things following this little rule of mine and I almost never regretted for not trying things. So I thought it will be good to bring it back for me:)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>

Now I have come back from holiday and started a fresh year of 2017, I would like to write about how 2016 has been for me.<br />
<br />
2016 was definitely a year of "change." I had signed up to do a year of editorial work with a Japanese magazine and I had few series of jobs that came via my illustration agency. I was also finding that the balance of doing day job and doing illustration was getting off balance. So I decided to put myself in the full-time illustration life. (Regardless of whether it was going to pay me or not, I had some savings and just wanted to try.)<br />
<br />
It was really hard for me to be a full-time illustrator. I realised that being an illustrator is a very lonely work. Until February 2016, I spent more than half of the week working in a busy cafe. Serving coffee and food, meeting people and working with a team of colleagues. Suddenly this interaction with people had stopped and I felt very uneasy. I felt like I was being depressed from stuck at home.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YrEF4oDwCn0/WIIkNiFknOI/AAAAAAAADxg/zBl1WJeBfScXFYCsB6l_4s3JD-dWjaBdACLcB/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YrEF4oDwCn0/WIIkNiFknOI/AAAAAAAADxg/zBl1WJeBfScXFYCsB6l_4s3JD-dWjaBdACLcB/s640/5.jpg" width="555" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">New illustration created for Illustrated 2016 from sketches at Kew Garden earlier in the year.</span></div>
<br />
So I decided to keep myself busy. -busy with creating illustrations. I applied to participate in exhibitions and fairs.<br />
I was invited to take part in Illustrated 2016. It was my first major group exhibition to take part in central London. Then an interview with a Japanese web magazine came along. The t-shirt I designed was in a group exhibition in Tokyo during the summer. I was also invited and decided to take part in a group exhibition in Japan in the winter. I also spent a good time creating illustration for TFL competition - which I later found out I was shortlisted.<br />
<br />
夏にはTシャツデザインをしている<a href="http://designart-museum.com/" target="_blank">Design@rt Museum</a>での東京でのグループ展があったり、また12月には<a href="http://www.laundry-graphics.jp/gallery/exhibitions/161205.html" target="_blank">Laundry Graphics Gallery</a>にて、グループ展にも招待され、参加いたしました。 <br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Laundry Graphics Gallery, Record jacket illustration</span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IxeLq5r4JBA/WIJHBzWvLZI/AAAAAAAADx0/BhScOTFjUeMpBkdadwvBldCgXO5ruL8uQCLcB/s1600/LP-cover-matheran-prt2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IxeLq5r4JBA/WIJHBzWvLZI/AAAAAAAADx0/BhScOTFjUeMpBkdadwvBldCgXO5ruL8uQCLcB/s400/LP-cover-matheran-prt2.jpg" width="388" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Laundry Graphics Gallery, Record jacket illustration</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Now I have written and looking back at what I have done in 2016, I was able to do a lot more illustration than previous years. Not enough to be full-time though but I re-discovered my love for being an illustrator. I have also found out that I want to be around people. Being around people is also an inspiration for my illustration. So for 2017, I am still keeping my illustration as my main priority but I am going back to my day job to maintain myself illustrating with a happy mind.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<br />

Japan<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Last week, I received a thank you email from the editor of a monthly fashion magazine, "MORE" from Shueisha Inc. in Japan. I have now completed a year of editorial illustration job for the magazine. It has been an honour to produce illustrations for them this year. MORE is a magazine I have known for a long time when I lived in Japan so when I got the contact to illustrate a page monthly it felt somehow surreal but at the same time very excited. It was also my first recurring job. Until then I had never took upon a job that happened regularly. So It was amazing as being an illustrator it is always hard not knowing when the next job will come in.<br />
<br />
The illustration style I was asked to produce was also different from my usual painted style. It was more of a line-drawn style with limited use of colours. Every month I was briefed to illustrate characters in a city around the world with an animal. Theme depended on the seasonal features of that month. I enjoyed the briefs every month. I had many opportunities to illustrate places or scenes I have never illustrated before. So it challenged me in a good way too. I am very grateful for the opportunity that MORE gave me and really really happy to have met the editor and the designer, the magazine and the magazine readers too. Thank you very much!!!<br />
<br />
There are still two more issues to be published with my illustrations in it. I'll be updating those on my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NozomiInoueillustration/" target="_blank">facebook page</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sq8L6tJsxK8/WFviq5bUc7I/AAAAAAAADws/aHKBryZJrTc2rZ-6WsYUcKkslA7iIu7nACLcB/s1600/more-03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="504" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sq8L6tJsxK8/WFviq5bUc7I/AAAAAAAADws/aHKBryZJrTc2rZ-6WsYUcKkslA7iIu7nACLcB/s640/more-03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">May issue was published in spring featuring colourful Bento recipes for ohanami (Japanese cherry-blossom watching/picnic)so the brief was a picnic. - I was specifically asked for western style picnic rather than the Japanese Ohanami style. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

It has been a while since my last post! I need to write more frequently!<br />
<br />
Since around September, along with my monthly editorial commissions I have been busy making a piece for an illustration competition, creating some wedding stationery for friends and creating new work for a group exhibition in Japan. (This coming December! I will write the detail in this post.)<br />
<br />
I will be heading to Japan for a week from the end of the month - Very exciting!!<br />
I can't wait to soak in onsen - public bath, especially in this weather! It's going to be good.<br />
<br />
"My Favourite Things" group exhibition in Tokyo<br />
From Monday 5th to Saturday 10th December I will be exhibiting my newly created work for LP record cover exhibition at Laundry Graphics Gallery in Tokyo.<br />
The theme for the cover was "My favourite things." So I could create anything I like or something related to a musician, <a href="http://kojimamayumi.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Mayumi Kojima</span></a> who will be performing at the event. So I combined the illustrations inspired by my trip to India few years ago and some of Mayumi's songs which feature sea and whales. I will post the images when I come back from the trip.<br />
You can see the exhibition detail <a href="http://www.laundry-graphics.jp/gallery/exhibitions/161205.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">here</span></a> at Laundry Graphic Gallery's website.<br />
<br />
Also during December, I will be having a stall out at St.Agatha's school Xmas fair in Kingston. Because of my trip to Japan I have laid off applying for bigger London Xmas fairs but thankfully, my husband, very kindly agreed to stand at the stall for me on 4th December while I am away...Thank you!! So anyone local, please come and visit Nozomi Inoue illustration stall for some prints, posters and cards on Sunday 4th December between 2-5pm.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
【My Favorite Things レコードジャケット展】 at Laundry Graphics Gallery in Tokyo.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

Over the last 3 months I was working on direct mailers and book fair poster for Barnes & Noble. (Images may change slightly subject to the final design of the text-placement.)<br />
It came as a nice surprise as I had never worked on series of illustration like this seasonal direct mailers.<br />
It was little challenging to get the right feel of the store at the beginning as I never visited the store. But with the references I got and feedbacks I had from the client I was able to pull it off. The client liked my "whimsical style" - as they called it, and wanted to turn the book store into an opening box - you might recognise the pink building from my past work.<br />
<br />
<br />

There were lots of elements in the January edition direct mailer and in the book fair poster. I don't think I have painted so may books and people in one piece before!<br />

Over the summer I had an opportunity to work on a book for Children's literacy, "Catching Clouds" written by Aleesah Darlison, published by Oxford University Press Australia and New Zealand.<br />
<br />
The book is about a girl who wanted to become friends with a cloud. They spend time together going for a walk and riding through the night sky but one day the cloud started to miss its other friends in the sky.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I enjoyed illustrating the girl and the cloud's adventure, especially the night sky scene. I was also asked to do a hand-written text for the title and the re-cap of the story at the end. It was interesting writing text with paint and brush.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The book is not for sale at retail stores but is available for schools to read for children.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>

I am delighted to announce that I was invited to be part of this year's Illustration file 2015. (Published in Japan.) It's my first time to put out my work on anything that is published in Japan. So I am very happy for this opportunity.<br />
I am hoping for opportunities in the future to do some work for Japanese audiences.<br />
Below is more detailed image of my page in the publication.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had a pleasure to work on my friend's wedding graphics this year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The request included a wedding tree illustration featuring the couple and her favourite animal, and a welcome board. Both illustrations were displayed at the reception.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The wedding tree is becoming popular at weddings in Japan these days. ( I hadn't heard about it until this job!) A leaf-less tree is decorated by the guests with leaf stamps or fingerprint and their signature. The tree will then have complete look after the guests' contribution.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Congratulations and wishing both a happy future to come!</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
